Why the Records are Being Publically Released
I have reason to believe the disk, containing a full set of the telephone records for the 13 year operational history of Pamela Martin and Associates, has already been pirated. Despite our very best intentions to maintain control of the information, our efforts seemingly have been for naught. I am concerned about manipulation of the database with false and misleading information. Even though such falsifications can be refuted in time by comparing an altered copy with the original, my attorney, Mr. Sibley, and I fear that in the intervening
time period, considerable damage can and will be done to the reputations of individual and entities with no connection to the business. Additionally, the overall validity of the records’ contents will be diminished when one false accusation after another begins to manifest. Therefore, to thwart any possible distorted version and to ensure the integrity of the information, the records, in their entirety, are available for downloading. -Jeane Palfrey
Deciphering this voluminous amount of data, some of which is well over a decade old, was not an easy task. A group of volunteers, four Boston based Brandeis University graduates calling themselves the the DC Phone Listers, spent nearly 100 hours laboriously scanning the records and running them through optical character recognition software. Per the piece on The Hill;
All in their mid-20s, the “D.C. Phone Listers” — as they identified themselves in their first e-mail to The Hill — are computer programmers and IT specialists who live and work in the Boston area. All have informed their employers of their work for the website. Fast friends since 2001, the Brandeis University alumni studied computer science, political science and philosophy and worked on the college newspaper. The website’s e-mail address includes the name “Dembitz” — the middle name of former Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis — in a nod to the group’s alma mater, which was named for the judge. The four aim to empower local reporters and citizen journalists, who may not have the resources of national media organizations, by posting the searchable database online. What this does is let someone in Kansas who has the right phone numbers search the data and see for himself,” Yoni said.
